Today the Tour of Rhodes takes place in Greece. Where are broadcast? Tiz Cycling! The answer is almost automatic. Paris-Roubaix? It’s the largest audience of all on the network. But this year it didn’t. Pandemic. Now only in October.

And the Olympics? The one in Japan?
2020 or 21? I don’t think so.

Today has the second stage of the Tour of Turkey.
Are you crazy? Who’s running there?

CAV.

Cavendish ?! Yet?
Are you kidding ?! He even won a bunch of bananas there once.
CAV is amazing!

But where do you watch cycling?

This question that always intersects with your desire to see that last kilometer of the arrival at the top of that penultimate stage (Queen) of the Tour of the Basque Country, you will certainly only be able to see quickly on Tiz Cycling! Your faithful TV gregarious for cycling events around the world. It’s like a safe haven! That respectful ‘Feed Area’. The last lifeline of many professional cycling fans, so used to suffering to watch women’s cyclocross stages off the coast of Belgium or lost after visiting the Roubaix Velodrome. You’ve got to be kidding?! It is like to suffer too much. Better to play soccer.

But if it’s the sport you like … do what? But you learn, live, get emotional, smile. Cycling brings happiness. You learn and you are more curious to know more and I was curious to know who is behind Tiz Cycling. By email, Tiz (so I started to call him) told me, that together with two other people, he runs the site directly from North Korea, using only homemade servers.

He told me that he started in 2015 as a video store and now accumulates an impressive catalog of races cataloged by name, categories, years and even with women’s and cyclocross events since the early 2000s. All content linked to YouTube videos that he is proud of his organisation.

But what really makes the site successful is its live broadcast of the Eurosport / GCN signal. The ‘pirate’ coverage hides the great work and commitment made by the website to democratize access to sport through the transmission and catalog of events around the world. The site relies only on the collaboration of its users and fans who finance the site through donations in Bitcoins and also through Buy me a Beer. A section of fans also support the channel – called Tiz Peloton, appearing from time to time with flags, souvenirs and paintings on the asphalt of the events, causing a certain joke and discomfort for the official broadcast.

10 questions for Tiz Cycling

Today the audience grows as more people have become interested in the sport, but who are these guys? Where are they from? Who are these freaks who have been hacking cycling evidence to show the world for years? To answer these and other questions, I got in touch with the people at Tiz Cycling and you can check out this interview now.

For security and privacy reasons, Tiz (so I came to call him), did not reveal his real name to me and treated the other two people who work with him by nicknames: Tash and Cookie.

Check now this exclusive interview, made by Junimba Simões.

10 questions for Tiz Cycling

1. How long has Tiz Cycling?
Tiz cycling as a site is from 2015. Before i used to upload the recordings on youtube.

2. Where are you from? And from where Tiz Cycling works?
I’m from North Korea, and the servers are from my place.

3. How many people are involved in Tiz Cycling?
It’s just me who works on live streams/recording/servers. Tash and Cookie handle the chat and the Upcoming races button and Ticker.
4. What was your principal motivation to have created the website?
I created the website, because cycling was very hard to find in 2016 outside Europe. I used to shared my recordings via youtube, but it was a mess. I wanted something well organised where you can find any cycling race. Until this day, you can’t find something like my site. On Eurosport player you can’t find recordings older then 6 months, and on GCN new app, it’s a mess to find something.

5. How to justify the slogan ‘Your #1 source for quality cycling
videos’ broadcasting illegally the races?
Well, quality is my main motto. On the web you always find some blurry 360p streams with a lot of pop-ups. I wanted an 1080 quality stream and recording. I’ve created what it was on my needs.

6. Could you inform how many people and money have already donated for the website?
Sorry, i don’t count them, and donations barely pays for clouds/bandwidth/processing issues.
7. The website is very stable. Has he never suffered a hacker attack?
Almost every day there are attacks, but with my experience, i managed to handle them.
8. Do you have problems in justice because of the broadcast rights?
My anonymity helps me keep safe and the site going.
9. How is the medium race audience of the website and when was the
biggest ‘pirate’ audience?
I won’t tell some insights numbers, but the bigger audience usualy is from Paris-Roubaix every year.
10. How to promote cycling as a big sport?
I’m trying to spread cycling as much as i can, and make it accessible worldwide for anyone. Lot’s of cyclist watch the recording of the races and it influence them in their training.

PS .: Incidentally, the obscure Rhodes Tour that has been taking place in Greece since 1987 with two victories by Fabian Cancellara (2001 and 2002), has not been broadcast by Tiz Cycling.

PS II .: Mark Cavendish has just won the stage 2 of the Tour of Turkey almost 3 years after his last victory.
